I always enjoyed Skippers as a kid.  Friendly service and food was hot and great.  Enjoyed the chowder and fish and chips.  Cute building located in Monmouth.

Friendly folks, quick service but the food is just mediocre! The fries were the best part of the meal, they were crisp, hot and fluffy on the inside. But the fish tasted exactly what it is...right out of a box. I like my coleslaw cold this was room temperature.
I won't be back. I paid $9 for crap I could have paid $12 at a restaurant and got teal fresh cod and beer battered like fish and chips should be,

Had grilled halibut, side green salad, and grilled veggies. Had to wait 30 minutes for my food. Everyone else had been served that came in after me. Veggies very skimpy, salad was ice berg lettuce only (I had to give 1st one back because it had cheese & croutons), and fish was good size. They use Pam spray on grill to cook and have no olive oil or alternatives to high sugar/fat dressings. Do not recommend if you are Paleo, whole30, or low carb to go here.

For elderly natives who remember when Mo was still alive, talking about seafood is like Southerners talking about the prewar South.  I nowadays patronize only Skippers and The Depot Restaurant in Albany, although a recent visit to McGrath's Center St. location gave some evidence that a bad situation there had been turned around.

Mostly I drop in for a shrimp debauch.  They do them well, fries are good, slaw is OK.  Nothing fancy.  The cocktail and other sauces are forgettable.  The accoustics are poor in this cavernous room but as a restoration of a historic building (the old Opera House), the work has been competent and I especially suggest examining the beautiful builders hardware on the magnificent doors.

The owners have recently opened a second restaurant in Monmouth, a few steps NW of the library.  Not as classy a building, but intimate, and with some outside seating.  The Monmouth library is excellent and after a pleasant browse, wandering over for some seafood can round out an excursion very nicely.

I have been a Skippers patron for years, and can't understand why so many stores have closed, because their chowder is the best, and freshly cooked piping hot fish and shrimp is delicious served with perfect baked potato or wonderful fries, and good slaw.  When Salem Skippers closed, they relocated in the quaint town of Independence.  From Salem, The ride out River Road is delightful!  Go and check it out.  If the Independence Skippers closes the next closest will be in Portland.  Skipper fans will agree there's no place like the fresh deliciousness of Skippers.
